Givers and Takers

Not too long ago, I read a book called Give and Take by Adam Grant (I highly recommend it). This book talks about the idea that there are mainly three types of people: givers, takers, and matchers. The givers want to make the lives of others around them better and generally like to do things for other people without expecting any reward. On the other hand, takers mainly focus on advancing their careers and just doing what is best for them. Matchers will match those with whom they interact. So if they are around takers, they will be like that, or if they are with givers, they will be more like that. What was interesting in this book was that although the givers sometimes did things that were potentially detrimental to their own careers, in the end, they were usually happier and made a bigger impact on their profession. They also had many people who would volunteer or be there for them if they ever needed help with a project. The takers might have performed better initially, but as their careers advanced, they often isolated many people, and this tended to hurt them down the line.

Although this is a bit of an overgeneralization for everyone, it is also good to be someone who looks out for others and tries to help when they can. It is much more fulfilling to help others rather than just focusing on yourself and blocking them all out. Do you see yourself as a taker, giver, or matcher? This is something to consider in the future, to make sure you can find a balance in fulfilling yourself while improving the lives of those around you!
