Healthy Morning Routine for College Students!

We all know that a healthy morning routine is key to having a fun and productive day. A good day can be made right when you wake up. So why do so many of us decide to stay in bed super late, watch tik tok, or scroll on Instagram for hours before we get up? The simple answer is that doing that is fun and enjoyable in the short term, but will not help us achieve our long-term goals. Most people say that they would like to improve themselves or the world around them but in reality, their actions do not demonstrate this. If you have taken the time to read this then it means that you might want to make a few changes. So in this blog post, I am going to lay out the things that I strive to do every morning to set myself up for success and a productive day.

A productive morning starts the night before

Before I go to bed, I always make sure that all my school stuff is ready to go for the next day, my devices are charging, my water bottle is filled, and all more sports gear is ready to go. This way when I wake up early in the morning, I don’t have to think. By putting my running shoes by the door, I am telling myself that when I wake up I don’t have a choice; I am going to go on a run. Preparing the night before saves time in the morning and makes decisions a lot easier.

Setting alarms and getting out of bed

This is by far what I struggle with the most, I am always snoozing my alarms and not getting out of bed, much to the annoyance of my roommates. However, even though this is a personal issue I have, I know that it is still important to try and get up as soon as you can after your alarm goes out, and DON’T HIT SNOOZE! This will allow you to get up at the exact time that you want and getting out of bed as soon as possible will help you fight the urge to go on your phone. Getting out of bed as soon as you wake up is a must for a productive day.

Hydration: start it early

Right after I get up I always wash my face and go into the kitchen and drink a big glass

of water. As you sleep you become slightly dehydrated, so it is important to drink water

as soon as you can in the morning. This might sound strange but starting with a small

amount can help and work your way up from there. Personally, I drink about 20ounces

of water right after I wake up. Drink water as soon as you get up to rehydrate.

Journal/Read

This is another one that can be a struggle for me, but I think that it is important.

Writing down some goals for the day, affirmations, or collecting your thoughts at the start

of the day is very beneficial and can have a huge impact. I know that I see a big

difference in my day when I take the time to do this. Another thing you could try is

taking the time to read a chapter of a good book. I am currently reading Atlas of the Heart

by Brene Brown and am really enjoying it. Learning something new every day is a great

practice to start, and this is one great way to do it. Start the morning right by reflecting

or learning something new.

Exercise: one of the best medicines

My day will just be better if I start with exercise. It is good to sweat at least once a day

and I like to do that in the morning. Getting outside for a run or going to the gym can really

make you feel better, reduce stress, help you sleep better, and make your day more

productive. There are so many benefits to exercise it's crazy! Get out outside and move,

your body will thank you!

Breakfast: the most important meal of the day

I know it is different for everyone and this can vary but I find eating breakfast to be super

important. I have found that when I don’t eat breakfast, I tend to be hungry throughout the

day and I eat more as a result. My mood levels are also lower and I tend to get more upset

with people. I recommend finding a quick breakfast that is easy and you can eat every day

before class or work. I personally enjoy eating overnight oats because it is delicious, quick,

and easy. Figure out if you are a person who needs breakfast or not, and find a

quick and easy breakfast you look forward to eating.
