Fat-Soluble Vitamins Part Two:

If you haven't already, check out part one of this series, where I discuss vitamins A & D. Today, we will be moving on to discuss vitamins E & K.

Vitamin E: This is not one of the popular ones, and the average person doesn't really know too much about this one. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which basically means that it prevents loose electrons/free radicals from damaging the DNA and leading to things like cancer or cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E protects the integrity of the cell DNA from being damaged. Another unknown role of vitamin E is maintaining the integrity of the cerebellum and oxidative damage (free radical) and ataxia (difficulty coordinating movements), peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation in the arms and legs). So even though most people aren't deficient in this vitamin and we aren't even aware of it, this vitamin plays a super important role in our bodies. You can get Vitamin E from nuts, seeds, and leafy greens.

Vitamin K: It is pretty well known that vitamin K helps your blood to clot, and without it, you can have excessive bleeding and an inability of your blood to clot. This is due to the fact that vitamin K is crucial for specific clotting factors (II,VII,IX,X), and without these, you will have longer bleeding times. A more unknown role is in the regulation of bone health, and it is thought to help in the utilization of calcium to help build stronger bones. Deficiency of this is rare except sometimes in babies if they haven't been given their vitamin K shot or if you are on like blood thinner such as warfarin. You can find Vitamin K in green leafy vegetables.

I hope you liked this two-part series and found it helpful in some ways. Next, we will be exploring the water-soluble vitamins. :)
